“To make college accessible to future leaders from Chicago” 
A Different World, Program Overview


A select group of young men and women from across the city dedicate six months of their time , talents, energy, and service to better Friend in the City Foundation and the City of Chicago. This committed young-citizens become part of the Foundation’s Team. The assignments given to individuals could include: conducting research, attending board meetings, facilitating fundraising events, and recruiting other youth. 

All Participants are united through monthly youth development sessions, a speaker series and small group meeting exploring financial aid, sexual harassment on a college campus, time management, employment, finance/budget. Participants will also explore different aspects of a non profit organization within the Executive office of the Founder. Lastly, each participant will receive a book scholarship, and each individual will qualify for other scholarships from the foundation and through our partners. 

 

Select Process


Selection as a program participant is based on the following:
  • Demonstrate commitment to academic growth
  • Be a resident of Cook County
  • A Board Member, or former participant must nominate you

Opportunity Scholarship


SCHOLARSHIP DESCRIPTION

The Opportunity Scholarship is awarded annually to a high school senior that has been accepted into a 4 year college/university. This individual must exhibit a great deal of interpersonal skills that would enable them to become a successful college graduate. These skills should be represented and shown through involvement in community service programs and extracurricular activities.

Eligibility Criteria


  1. Be a U.S Citizen and resident of Illinois.
  2. Possess a 2.5 G.P.A or better.
  3. Must have a college acceptance letter on school letterhead.
  4. Must have official high school transcripts.
  5. Need three recommendation letters.

How to apply: 
(Application available June 2018)


  • Complete and submit application.
  • Must write and submit a 1,000 word essay answering the question: Why is community service important?
  • Submit all documents required, at the same time.
AWARD AMOUNT: $1,000
